Wahaika is a traditional Maori hand weapon and the name loosely translates as fishes mouth . Waha=mouth and Ika=fish. It is believed this comes from the gap often found on the side of the weapon. It also has an ancestral  figure on the side to protect and guard over the owner in battle. The wheku or koruru on the butt is also a protector.

Wahaika were traditionally used in hand to hand battle thrusting and cleaving. Nowdays it can be used in an oratory role or in performances . Weapons are taonga  or treasures often handed down generations .
