Book Art of the pacific
Art of the Pacific, published in 1979, is a significant volume in the study of Oceanic art, featuring photographs by the distinguished photojournalist Brian Brake. The book presents a comprehensive photographic survey of art forms and artifacts (taonga in Māori) from across the Pacific region, curated with textual contributions from ethnologists and writers, including James McNeish and David Simmons, a former ethnology curator at the Auckland Museum.
The work is noted for its high production values and its influential role in bringing Pacific art to a wider New Zealand and international audience. Brake's photographic approach, which employed dramatic and directional lighting, was instrumental in highlighting the sculptural qualities of the objects, a style that reflected his background in studio portraiture and film. The book served as a precursor to his later, highly acclaimed work documenting the Te Māori exhibition in the 1980s.
